Summary

My lab's research focuses on the population and community ecology of freshwater fishes, investigating how stressors such as anthropogenic climate change, drought, wildfire, and land-use change affect freshwater processes (e.g., stream flows, temperatures, drying) across a wide range of aquatic ecosystems, from sub-Arctic and boreal riverscapes in Alaska to dryland streams and desert springs of the Great Basin. This research bridges the gap between basic and applied fisheries ecology, integrating quantitative ecological analyses, spatial statistical methods, bioenergetic and life-cycle modeling, landscape ecology, and conservation biology to deliver actionable science that addresses the multiscale conservation and management issues driven by the needs of our cooperators. Current projects examine drought and watershed vulnerability across the western U.S., riparian forest restoration and stream food web dynamics in the Sierra Nevada, spawning and early life history of endemic desert fishes, and integrated monitoring frameworks for native and non-native fishes in desert spring ecosystems.
