While the biosynthetic pathways of primary metabolite production are highly conserved, the pathways that produce specialized metabolites are not under the same selective pressures allowing for the evolution of a highly diverse suite of metabolites distributed across diverse taxa. This course explores this diversity and the function of these natural products from the ecology and evolution of the organisms that make them to the humans that use them.
