Chalking guidelines
Chalking is permitted for University departments and ASUN/GSA-recognized student groups only to advertise campus events that include time, date, location and sponsor. Chalking for general messaging or programming is not allowed. UAM 5,305
Request and approval
Chalking requests must be e-mailed to Scheduling Services at least three (3) working days before the event. Include the following:
- Date and time chalking will occur
- The event being advertised
- Specific sidewalk locations (and nearby buildings)
- Text to be written (must include event date, time and location)
- The sponsoring group or department
- The contact information for the submitter
For permission to chalk in front of the Joe Crowley Student Union, the E.L. Wiegand Fitness Center or the residence halls, requests must be emailed to the Associate Vice President of Student Affairs, at studentlife@unr.edu.
Chalking placement requirements
- Chalk must be at least 25 feet from any building entrance.
- Only water-soluble chalk is allowed; spray chalk and artist pastels are prohibited.
- Chalking is allowed only on horizontal sidewalks.
- Chalking is not permitted:
- Under awnings at the Joe Crowley Student Union
- On pavers or bricks
- On vertical surfaces, including stair risers, porches, entryways and foundations
- On walls, pillars, posts, benches, doors, trash receptacles or kiosks
- On outdoor athletic facilities
- General messaging is not permitted.
Removal and cleanup
- Chalking is permitted for up to 7 days, including the cleanup date.
- Chalk must be removed within one (1) day following the event.
- Incomplete removal may result in a cleanup charge; failure to comply with chalking policy may affect future privileges.
